Evening Star
‘Twas noontide of summer,
And mid-time of night;
And stars, in their orbits,
Shone pale, thro’ the light
Of the brighter, cold moon,
‘Mid planets her slaves,
Herself in the Heavens,
Her beam on the waves.
I gazed awhile
On her cold smile;
Too cold- too cold for me-
There pass’d, as a shroud,
A fleecy cloud,
And I turned away to thee,
Proud Evening Star,
In thy glory afar,
And dearer thy beam shall be;
For joy to my heart
Is the proud part
Thou bearest in Heaven at night,
And more I admire
Thy distant fire,
Than that colder, lowly light.
-Poe
This ad postcard by the Social Development Network (SDN aka a government-run dating agency here in Singapore) makes me so angry that I actually feel physically unwell.
I am going to have to do this in point form because I’m so angry and I will try to be coherent. These are my problems with it, and I’m no expert:
1) It imposes this ‘natural’ progression of an individual’s life. This view of what you should be doing but the nuclear family unit is a relatively modern phenomenon. Moreover this vision of heteronormality is one that has been determined by the government, not the individual.
2) This is not science, so don’t you dare use the word “evolution”. This is social engineering, not factual objective science.
3) What about the people who are not cis, straight or otherwise don’t fit into the male/female dichotomy of ‘mainstream’ society? Are my gay, trans, asexual (and so on) friends somehow less evolved than their cis and straight counterparts?
4) By being of majority age but single, I am somehow less evolved than my friends who are in relationships. This enrages me beyond words. My relationship status DOES NOTdetermine the value of my life. I will pay my taxes, I will contribute to society, I will make someone’s life a bit more interesting, I will stimulate the economy, I will be filial to my parents. But just because of one thing — I am not in a relationship with a member of the opposite sex, either by choice or circumstance — I am worth less in the eyes of the government. I am less evolved. I am not a human being who is worth much.
5) Women are not gachapon machines. You do not put money into them and out pops a baby. So many factors determine whether couples choose to have a child/ren that aren’t just financial. It is demeaning and sexist and patriarchal and assumes that the couple’s natural place — the woman’s natural place — is to have children.
6) You do not determine what I do with my body. Not just as a woman, but as a human being. YOU HAVE NO RIGHT.
7) Because SDN is a government agency, these are being printed with taxpayer money. This vision of hetero-normality is being imposed on us, against our will, with our money.
That’s all I can think about and articulate right now, because I am just so angry. Shame on you, SDN. Shame on you, government.
1) Do you even know what the term ‘imposes’ is? Yes, they’re trying to put this relatively modern idea of a nuclear family unit into your head. A unit that has otherwise proven to be stable in our society. Nobody is putting a gun to your head and telling you ‘subscribe or die’
2) Fair point
3) Can you look at the illustration on the ad? The baby has a fucking larger head and equal sized torso as the child. It’s an illustration for age, not evolutionary stages. Your argument is only valid if you make a case for amputees or children with hair or humans that don’t have sticks for arms. And not insinuate that people who are not cis/straight or otherwise have significantly different anatomies with the exception of sexual organs. Oh, there are no sexual organs illustrated here, does that mean anyone with sexual organs are marginalized by this ‘imposition’ of ‘evolutionary concept’?
4) Once again, the illustration is about age. No one is saying you are less evolved, but rather they’re trying to convince you that ohne might love the idea of heteronomality. The truth is this: A straight, childbearing couple is important to the country’s survival. There’s no case for your argument for being perceived as less human when you receive the same healthcare rights, voting rights, educational rights as any other Singaporean. Its a simple task of recognising that childbearing is not an area in which you can contribute in. But if you don’t, you demean the sacrifice that women around Singapore make just to raise our future generation. It’s great that you want to prove you’re a good citizen, but don’t you dare try and say that when you’re just hunting for things to be angry at.
5)You do realize that finances are a really important reason why people don’t have children right? If finances were a guarantee, you’d definitely see more people having children. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution so for this campaign, the SDN/Gahmen is targetting the BIGGEST one. It’s not demeaning, it’s not sexist, and not patriarchal to assume a couple’s natural place is to have children. Having children is as natural as the urge to have sex, the act of which without human-devised means of contraception produces children. Prove that its more natural for heterosexual couples to not want to have sex. And after that, prove to me that the nuclear family is a concept as modern as not having children.
No one is specifically highlighting women here, just you.
6) Yeah that’s why having babies is national service right!!!!! My dear, you are inserting an argument for the rights to have an abortion in the United States of America, against a promotion for couples to have babies. One is legislature, the other is advertisement. The million dollar question is, which is which?????
7)Because SDN is a government agency, it has to do its job of making sure that there are “Singaporeans” for the future. These are all entirely optional to partake of. It’s allowed to fail. It’s not enforceable law If you ask me, adding additional maternity leave, paternity leave, or childcare leave sounds like a stronger imposition of hetero-normality to me. Why don’t you go protest against that? In fact, why should your precious tax money be used to subsidise some other child’s education or healthcare? My goodness.
You’re being childish just because you’re excluded from an interest group that makes a lot of socioeconomic sense. You put it like this was a SDN endorsed ad that said “Breed or die” or “Slay the gays”. They just want people to marry and have kids. If you want to be in the gang, get married and have kids. If you’re going to take offence at every single advertisement of which you weren’t the target group, be my guest.
Still get a tone of questions on how I’m losing weight. I’m mixing cardio, trampolining and walking. And pilates. Pilates is the knew thing I swear by. By mixing these videos with cardio and eating clean, you’ll get results very quickly.

We stand upon the brink of a precipice. We peer into the abyss—we grow sick and dizzy. Our first impulse is to shrink away from the danger. Unaccountably we remain… it is but a thought, although a fearful one, and one which chills the very marrow of our bones with the fierceness of the delight of its horror. It is merely the idea of what would be our sensations during the sweeping precipitancy of a fall from such a height… for this very cause do we now the most vividly desire it.

(Make sure you stretch both sides! I like to do this routine twice on each side as I find myself a little looser after the first run through. Hold each stretch for 20-30 seconds. )
Stretching for the Splits: Quick Guide
I get a lot of asks about how to achieve a split, so I took a couple quick videos today to help out anyone who is working toward this goal! These are my favorite side splits stretches. Here are a few things to keep in mind when stretching for the splits:
- Warm up fully before beginning to stretch! This is important. Warm muscles are much looser and more pliable than cold ones, and much less prone to injury. It’s best to save the stretching for after your workout, or if you aren’t planning on working out, do 5-10 minutes of a full body cardio session that gets your heart rate up. Jumping jacks, kicks, jogging around, running up and down the stairs, dancing to a fast song or two… whatever gets your blood flowing. I find it helpful to do some squats, lunges, and high-knees before stretching my legs as well.
- Try to keep the hips squared when you stretch.This means that both your hips will be facing forward, your legs should be nearly in line with each other, the knee and foot of the back leg will be facing the floor, and your torso should not twist out to the side. Think of pulling the back leg forward and the front leg back. Whether you perform your split squared or turned out/open will depend on your sport/dance style and aesthetic preference, but when stretching always aim for squared hips as it allows a deeper stretch.
- Stretch to the point of discomfort, NOT PAIN. Don’t hurt yourself! A pulled muscle can set back all of your progress for weeks or months, so listen to your body!
- Don’t stretch every day. My general rule is that if my muscles feel fine, I will stretch 2 days in a row, but try to give yourself a break at least every few days and especially if your muscles are very sore. Just like strength training, your body needs time to repair any muscles damage. Stretching too much can actually inhibit your progress. Light stretching however is ok every day.
- Be patient! Splits don’t happen overnight. It may take some 4 weeks and others 4 months and others 4 years, but keep at it and you will see results :)
Of course there are many many more stretches that you can do to help achieve your splits, but these are the basics that will target the hamstrings and hip flexors for your split. Make sure to vary your routine and add new stretches every so often!
This is a GREAT post. However, I am VERY close to doing the splits this way. Stretch kicks help bigtime in stretching for this as well. If anybody has a post for stretches for doing splits the other way that would be sublime! and you should share it with me :D
This is awesome!
What do you guys do on rest days?
Be honest, now!
